Treatment

General

Labyrinthitis usually resolves itself within the course of one or a few weeks, depending upon the severity of the infection.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics are the most common treatment, if the infection is considered to be bacterial. As you may know, viral infections cannot be treated with antibiotics. Viral infections are the most common cause of Labyrinthitis.

Antihistamines

Treatment may also include the use of Antihistamines, which can reduce the swelling surrounding the infection, thus reducing the severity of symptoms. Sedatives and some anti-nausea drugs may also have this effect.

Surgery

Unfortunately, in a handful of cases, some patients may require surgery to drain the inner and middle ear.

Supportive Care

Bed rest for 3 - 5 days for patients with Labyrinthitis is typically recommended, until the dizziness subsides. Dehydrated patients suffering from repeat vomiting may require intravenous fluid replacement. Patients are also advised not to drive or conduct similar activities for 4 - 6 weeks after the acute symptoms have subsided. This is due to occasional dizzy spells re-occuring during this time.
